We're a small studio, so the person who reads your email is usually the person who can fix the thing. Most replies go out within two business days.

It helps to include your kid's first name (if the problem involves their device), what you expected to happen, and what happened instead. Screenshots are always welcome.

Setting up

How does Tuppence work, in one paragraph?

You set up a profile for each kid and list the chores you care about. When a chore gets done, your kid marks it and (if you asked for one) sends a photo. You approve it from your phone, and the money splits automatically across three jars: Spend, Save and Give.

The split is the point. A kid who watches three numbers move every time they earn something learns that money has jobs, not just a balance.

Is Tuppence a bank? Where does the money actually live?

No, and this matters. Tuppence holds no money and moves no money. There's no card, no account to open, nothing insured, because there's nothing on deposit.

The balances in the app are a record of what you and your kid have agreed. You keep the actual cash. When your kid cashes out, you hand it over — which turns out to be the part they remember.

Interest and loans work the same way: they're teaching tools, funded by you, settled between the two of you.

How do I sign in? I don't remember setting a password.

You didn't — Tuppence has no passwords. You sign in one of two ways:

  • Enter your email and we send you a link and a six-digit code. Either one gets you in.
  • Sign in with Apple, if you set that up.

Links and codes expire after 10 minutes. If yours has run out, just ask for another.

Can my partner have their own access?

Yes. In the Family tab you can invite another adult and choose what they can do — a co-parent can approve chores and manage the family, or you can invite someone as a viewer who can see and cheer but not change anything.

Kids & devices

How do I get Tuppence onto my kid's device?

Install the app on their device and choose the kid option when it asks. Then, on your phone, open the kid's profile and generate a pairing code. Enter that code on their device and the two are linked.

Treat pairing codes like passwords — anyone holding one can pair to that profile until it expires, which is 5 minutes after you create it.

My kid doesn't have their own device. Can we still use it?

Partly, and it's worth being clear about the limits.

A profile that's never paired still works for the money side: you can add or adjust coins, set an allowance, run the jars, and track a goal — all from your own phone. Nothing is collected from your child in that setup, because there's no device sending anything.

What needs their device is chores. Marking a chore done is something your kid does in the app, so a profile with no device can't complete them. If sharing a device suits you better, they can sign in on yours to mark things done and then hand it back.

What happens to chore photos?

They're private to your family and they don't stick around. A photo is deleted the moment you review it, whether you approve it or send it back. If a photo is never reviewed, it's deleted automatically after 7 days.

Photos are stripped of embedded metadata, including any location information, before they ever reach our servers.

What does it mean when a kid is "napping"?

Napping means that kid isn't using one of your plan's slots right now. They stay in your family and keep everything — jars, history, goals — they just can't use the app until you wake them.

It's the right tool for a temporary break: a summer at the other parent's, a phone that's been taken away, a kid who's lost interest for a month. Nothing is lost and it's reversible in one tap.

I removed a kid by mistake. Can I get them back?

Yes, as long as it's been less than 90 days. Go to Settings → Subscription & kids and look for "Recently removed" — bringing them back restores their original jars, history, chores, streak and goals exactly as they were.

The app shows you the exact date the window closes. After that date everything is permanently deleted and nobody can recover it, including us.

Subscription & billing

How much does Tuppence cost?

There's a free trial to start. After that it's a monthly subscription that covers your first kid, with a smaller amount added per extra kid, up to five. Current prices are shown in the app before you're charged anything.

How do I cancel, and how do I get a refund?

Apple handles all billing for Tuppence, so both happen on their side rather than ours.

  • To cancel: open your device Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and cancel Tuppence there. It stays active until the end of the period you've paid for.
  • For a refund: request it from Apple. We can't issue App Store refunds directly, though we're happy to help you sort out whatever prompted it.
I removed a kid but my bill didn't go down.

Removing a kid frees their slot straight away, but it doesn't change your plan — Apple handles plan changes, so we can't do it from inside the app.

You have two options, and neither is wrong. Add another kid into the free slot at no extra cost, or open your subscription in Settings and drop to a smaller plan. A downgrade takes effect at your next renewal, so nothing changes before then.

What happens if my subscription lapses?

Your family's data stays put and the app becomes read-only, so you can resubscribe and pick up where you left off. Nothing is deleted at that point.

If an account then goes completely unused for 12 months, we delete it and everything in it — but we email you a warning at least 30 days beforehand, and simply opening the app resets the clock.

Your data

What do you collect about my child?

As little as the app can work with: a first name or nickname, a birth month and year, and an avatar — all entered by you. Plus what happens in the app: chores done, jar balances, goals, badges.

We don't collect a child's email, phone number, precise location, contacts or browsing history. Kids under 13 can't type free text into the app at all.

The full detail is in our Privacy Policy, including a standalone Children's Privacy Notice.

Do you sell data or show ads?

No, and there is nothing like that in the app. No advertising, no selling data, for any child, full stop. We also don't use your family's information to train AI models.

How do I see, export or delete our data?

Everything we hold about your child is visible in your own dashboard. You can delete a photo, a kid's profile, or your entire account from Settings.

For an export, or if you'd rather we handled a deletion for you, email legal@tuppenceapp.com. We'll verify you're the parent on the account first, then aim to respond within 30 days.

I think someone got into my account.

Email legal@tuppenceapp.com straight away and we'll freeze the account while we sort it out.

Worth knowing how we've built this: changing the email on an account requires confirmation from both the old and the new address, and we always notify the old one. So a single compromised inbox isn't enough to take an account over.

Something's broken

The pairing code isn't working

Pairing codes expire 5 minutes after you create one, so the usual fix is to generate a fresh code from the kid's profile and enter it straight away. Check both devices are online, and that you're typing it on your kid's device rather than your own.

One thing to know: making a new code doesn't cancel an older one — each stays usable until its own five minutes run out. If you've shared a code somewhere you'd rather you hadn't, wait for it to expire rather than assuming a new code replaced it.

A chore photo won't upload

Almost always a connection problem — the photo is taken in the app and then sent, so a weak signal stalls it. Have your kid try again somewhere with better reception. If it keeps failing, they can mark the chore done without a photo and you can approve it as normal.

I'm not getting notifications

Two places to check. In your device Settings, find Tuppence and make sure notifications are allowed. Then in the app, open Settings → Notifications and check the specific ones you want are switched on.

The email you sent never arrived

Check your spam or junk folder first — sign-in emails sometimes land there the first time. Everything we send comes from hello@app.tuppenceapp.com, so adding that to your contacts usually stops it happening again.

Sign-in links and codes expire after 10 minutes, so if you've been waiting a while, ask for a new one rather than using the old email.

Nothing here matches my problem

Email support@tuppenceapp.com and describe what happened. There's no form to fill in and no ticket number — you'll get a reply from a person.

Accessibility

We build Tuppence and this website to be usable by everyone, and we aim to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. That means readable contrast, full keyboard access, proper support for screen readers, and respecting your system settings for reduced motion and larger text.

If any part of Tuppence or this site is difficult for you to use, please tell us at support@tuppenceapp.com. Describe what you were trying to do and what got in the way, and we'll treat it as a bug rather than a request — we'd rather fix it than explain it.
